Airlocked Test Drive

Since we know a lot of people are ready and eager to start playing around in this setting, welcome to the first ever official Airlocked Test Drive! For this test drive, we do have a posting format:

In the header of your comment, put your Character's Name and their Champion title. You don't have to put in the canon if you don't want, but you can if you feel the need.

And the guidelines we ask you to follow are, please try to include at least one prompt in your top-level to reply to, and if you make a top-level try to tag out to at least one other person. We want everyone to get a chance to give their choices a fair shake, after all.

Here are some examples to get you started:

A - Arrival
You wake up in a bed that's not your own, in a shiny chrome room that has bright fluorescent lights that light up along the floor as soon as your feet hit it and glowing sconces on the walls. Whether it's much different from what you're used to or not different at all, it's time to figure out where you are and more importantly, whether you're alone.

B - Mealtime
Well sweet, at least there's a cafeteria! But wait, it seems like there's only hot food during certain times of day. The rest of the time if you go foraging in the kitchen you can find weird silver packages with the name of food on the side that...definitely don't seem big enough to hold the food in question. If you open it up, it seems oddly dry...

C - Zero G
A zero gravity room! Awesome! The walls and floor are textured to give you something to hang onto to crawl across back to the control panel, but if you're floating in the middle of the room you might need someone to give you a push.

D - Holo Deck
A room where all your dreams come true. Kind of. In a photorealistic display of light and sound.

E - Anything else!

This is not an official reserve, nor does it guarantee a slot in the game, but if you do choose to app a character that you test drove, you can use two minimum 20-comment threads or one minimum 40-comment thread (so at least 20 total comments from your character) in place of writing a sample. So have fun with it!

Ah--! S-sorry.

[He's huge. Satoru backs up a step and tries to curb a nervous smile.]

I thought... maybe this was the hospital? Or a really bad dream.

[Anders is used to children, after all some children were taken to the Circle very, very young, and there was no shortage of orphans and sick children in Darktown.

So he crouches down to the boy's level immediately, offering a reassuring but concerned smile.]

The hospital? Are you hurt?

[Whoa, he shouldn't have to come down that far, Satoru's twenty-nine yea--

He catches sight of himself in the polished shine of the walls and freezes.

...

WELL THEN.

Satoru shakes his head firmly and actually tries to smile this time. It's more than a little forced and trembly.]

Uh, no! Not at all. I just, um, well... When you wake up somewhere you don't know, isn't that the first thing you think? E-especially when it's cold like this!

[What the hell is going on.]

[Anders' expression softens, but his smile fades when the boy forces a smile.]

This place is like no clinic I've ever seen. ...Are you certain you're not sick? I'm a healer, it's my duty to help.

[timeslipped]

I'm not, I'm--achoo.

[...

He looks pointedly away at the wall and hides a snuffle into the elbow of his unitard. At least he knew to sneeze into his sleeve rather than into poor Anders's face.

It's hard to tell when Satoru's hair's so dark, but it does look slightly damp.]

[...Oh, well that's the mildest symptom that he's. Ever seen. It's almost like a little kitten sneeze, and he can't help but smile a little bit.]

Here. Humor me, let's see if there's anything I can do.

[And with that warning, he reaches out and brushes some of the damp hair away from the boy's forehead and puts his hand to the slightly warm skin there.

There's a small push of energy that feels a little like something warm and gentle, accompanied by a soft blue glow around Anders' hand. The healer takes his hand back when he's done and smiles warmly.]

There. Better?

[Satoru gasps quietly and hops backwards a bit.]

You--it, it really glowed!

[What is going ON today?!]

[Anders looks guarded for a second, like he's assessing the boy's reaction for any sign of threat. But then he simply nods.]

It did, that was healing magic. It won't do you any harm.

[He holds out the same hand, palm up, to show him that it's perfectly normal, now.]

[timeslipped]

But magic isn't--

[Real, says the time-traveling wannabe manga-ka. Satoru covers his eyes and takes a deep breath, and mutters to himself:]

It's just a dream, Mom is fine, it's just a dream, you're hallucinating...

[Anders bites his tongue. The child is clearly scared, and just as clearly Not From Thedas (because this is definitely not Thedas anymore), he doesn't need a lecture about magic.

He does, however, stand up.]

You should make sure to stay hydrated. If you don't know where you are, try to boil any water you find before you drink it.

...Isn't that the kind of advice you give people who are camping in the woods?

[Satoru lowers his hands a tad.]

Is that even a concern if we can't find a way out of here?

It's good advice no matter where you are. If you don't know that a water source is trustworthy, you need to remove as many impurities as you can before you drink it.

[Of course that has no bearing on if it's poisoned, but.

His voice wavers a little when he responds.]

There has to be a way out of here.

[timeslipped]

[Somehow, it does seem like trusting strange waters is the last thing he should be doing. He rubs his nose on his sleeve one more time and shakes his head.

Fine. Magic. Whatever. He can deal with this. Everything that's happened today has been absurd and nightmarish, what's one more little thing in what's likely to be some coma phantasm?]

Have you looked everywhere yet? Have you seen my--a Japanese woman in her--[Wow, he has to do some quick mental math here.]--uh, her thirties? She might look a little like me? Or a younger girl, high school age?

[problemagic]

[He's surprised by the question, mostly because what's a Japan, also what's a high school, but then he shakes his head, his expression softening.]

I'm afraid not. Is that your mother and sister?

[timeslipped]

The first one, that's my mother. The second one, the girl... her name is Katagiri Airi. She's...

[Well, he's gonna get a funny look if he explains that he knows her from work.]

She's a friend.

[And she might have been able to tell him more about the last thing he saw.]

[problemagic]

[Anders' expression is pitying, but not unkind.]

If they're here, we'll find them. And if not, then I promise you we'll get you home to them.

[timeslipped]

...Okay.

[After a pause, he shakes his head to clear it and balls up his fists. He has to figure out what's going on.]

Have you looked everywhere yet? For a way out, I mean. Do we even know where this is?
